Say Cheese!

Rajesh is excited as he speaks about how he travelled all the way from Kottayam to Kochi just for one day. “We attended the learning circles, and now I feel that I really need to learn something new”, he says.

On 13th July 2019, we hosted the first edition of TinkerDay at Maker Space in KSUM, Kochi. We witnessed students, professionals and freelancers come forward in huge numbers to embrace their role as a part of a community.

TinkerDay is a community event that brings our community members, mentors and achievers together. The prime focus of the event is to bring about a sense of belonging in the whole community scenario. Tech-savvy, learner, entrepreneur or tech enthusiast, no matter what your persona, we have a place for you.

Here are the segments that our attendees engaged in and gained value from in one fun day:

💭In Conversation

“Success is not attained overnight. It comes in instalments; you get a little bit today, a little bit tomorrow until the whole package is given out.”

~ Israelmore Ayivor

In Conversation is TinkerDay’s prime focus, where our core team personnel engage in conversation with entrepreneurs, startup founders or achievers in any domain with a technical background. It functions as a platform for people to share the ups and downs of their journey to inspire those who are on the same mission. In other words, to let people know the lesser-known story of what life was before they tasted success.

This edition of TinkerDay In Coversation had the co-founders of Neuroplex sharing their story with Mehar MP, Co-founder, TinkerHub. The company is the brainchild of Pranoy Radhakrishnan and Savio Victor who aspired to find solutions to existing problems. Neuroplex stemmed out of their persistence and resolve to build meaningful products and solve real problems by diving deep into them. Read more about them here:

👨‍🏫Learning Story

Something we never get tired of, here at TinkerHub, is learning and talking about learning.

Ann Philip

“The illiterate of the 21st Century are not those who cannot read and write but those who cannot learn, unlearn and relearn.”

~ Alvin Toffler

TinkerHub has a pool of brilliant minds (including schoolkids and college-goers) who have hacked tech-learning opportunities and scholarships. Learning Story is an open panel discussion about such opportunities and learning paths from those who have already been there and done that. Any attendee can pose questions and learn from peers during this exercise.

Deena Lin Mathai was the host of this segment, where Ann Philip, one of the recipients of the Google WTM Scholarship 2018 was the guest speaker. She shared her learning story while emphasising the importance of mentoring, grit and developing a sense of community belonging. Read about Ann Philip’s journey here:

👩‍💻Learning and Networking Circles

At the time of registration, each attendee was given a list of seven domains to choose from. Learning and Networking is the session that offers the most value to each attendee, depending on where their passion for tech lies. The entire audience is split into different groups depending upon their area of interest.

An expert in each field spends time with the enthusiasts of the same domain and share valuable insights, experiences and hacks to learn and land a career in their area of interest.

This time, we had six parallel tracks featuring experts:

Machine Learning track: Led by Pranoy Radhakrishnan and Savio Victor from Neuroplex

UI/UX track: Led by Lazim Aslam and Niyaz Ashraf

Python and Backend/DevOps track: Led by Gopikrishnan Sasikumar and Vyas Swaroop from FullContact

Entrepreneurship track: Led by Mehar MP and Kurian Jacob, Digital Marketing Strategist

Data Analytics track: Led by Avinash S Kurup, Data Scientist at 10xDS.

Since most of the attendees were students working on a technical project, the programme was designed to cater to their needs and broaden their perspective.

🙌Community shout-out and launch of PyLad

Py-Lad, an innovative mentorship program for Python enthusiasts designed and run by TinkerHub Foundation, was launched by our community interns Kiran and Sneha. Over 250 learners, including students and professionals, are currently learning on Py-Lad.

Read all about Py-Lad here:

Community shout-outs let representatives of other tech communities take over and address the crowd for a stipulated time. This time, it was Abhay PA from LetsPy who gave a community shout-out about their 2-day workathon set to happen in August at Kottayam, Kerala.

John F Kennedy once said, “Leadership and learning are indispensable to each other.”

Meetups like TinkerDay aim to promote the growth and development of a learning culture among a young generation that is in need of the tools and skills to lead the future.

So that’s a wrap, tinkerers. We hope this story has been able to trigger your innovative spirits!
