Getting real about careers
Today, we’re proud to announce the launch of Real Talk, an app we’ve been hard at work on for the past 6-months as part of a collaboration with The Learning Partnership (TLP) on iOS, Android, and web.
It all started when we were approached to tackle a problem that we all held close to our heart, helping high school students be better informed and equipped to make career decisions that aligned with their skills, passions, and lifestyle goals.
Frankly, we’ve all sat there in gr. 12 and tried to pick programs, institutions, and careers mostly on a whim, maybe because our parents told us to, or because our friends were doing it, but essentially missing out on the world of possibility that exists for us to do something that aligns with our unique self.
Typically, we finish school, get out there in the working world, and realize in hindsight that we could have done so much more. We wanted to change all that and tackle issues like new grad unemployment, underemployment, and the tremendous student debt amounts head on.
TLP had done some research and discovered that most students limited themselves to their parents and sometimes guidance counsellors for career advice and input. What we wanted to do was exponentially increase the number of professionals they could turn to for real-life, no b.s. advice and resources on how to break-into and succeed in their careers of interest.
Enter Real Talk, a crowdsourced career app filled with advice, insights, and resources from real people doing real jobs. With 100’s of careers and 1000’s of resources that students can bookmark and add to their profile, they can start exploring and learning more about careers, programs, and schools that they never would have come across otherwise.
We know that finding the right career will still be an ongoing process for all of us as we continue to grow and evolve as individuals, but with Real Talk, we wanted to increase the chances of students discovering and exploring careers that fit them earlier on, rather than jumping through never-ending hoops before getting frustrated and sometimes giving up.
