Looking to increase newsletter signups on your site?

My friend Veni, from codewithveni.com, asked me for some tips for increasing email signups:

Need some suggestions. My blog posts seem to be getting a lot of shares but I get no email sign ups from those pages. What are you doing to get people to subscribe?

Watch this screencast:

Things to try:

  • Embed your subscription form in the middle of your blog post (not just at the top or bottom).
  • Don’t just put your subscription form in the sidebar, at the top right.
  • Try using a button instead of having the whole form on the page.
  • Try using a welcome mat. As soon as someone lands on the homepage or blog post, have a big form cover the page asking them to subscribe.
  • Offer downloadable bonus content related to the post or your topic.
  • Offer a 5-day email course. “Learn to draw in 5 days.” This has been the most effective strategy for me personally.
  • Customize your signup buttons and forms for mobile. Often we view our pages on desktops, forgetting that most of our visitors are on phones.

A note on welcome mats and pop-up modals: Google is going to begin penalizing these, particularly for mobile search. (More details here).
