How to stand out from the crowd

How are you different?

At a concert, the crowd moves their hands in sync to the same beat. It is an exciting scene and wonderful to be a part of, but we always have the option to step aside and enjoy the show our own way. We also have the ability to create our own concert. This is the beauty of life.

In a meditation recently, I asked myself how much of my time is being controlled by others. Not literally controlled by them, but their outside expectations and communications controlling my real train of thought.

I saw my thoughts and focus symbolized by literally a train.

Shouldn’t a train of thought be focused and linear like a real train — heading to its desired destination?

Lately, I have actively pursued being more like a real train. This means setting my own intentional path for self-defined success, choosing the right fuel, and staying the course. One example is turning off notifications and answering emails/messages later in the day. These external controls become second in line to my real creation time.

A train that is constantly stopping, questioning its direction, trying to make random turns, and essentially having an endless number of conductors is of little value.

Of course, we need to respond to others, but you can address these outside expectations when you reach a brief train stop, refuel, and assess your continued route.

Trains don’t become distracted and make random turns due to passengers’ endless thoughts and ideas.

“To be everywhere is to be nowhere.”

— Seneca

Ask yourself:

Is the current track I’m on going to get me to where I want to be or where someone else wants me to be?
