It all started on the road. A road of a thousand journeys, along with a thousand faces, their travel tips and the ones I was able to give to them. A lot of chatting about the best guesthouse in Ulaanbaatar, or the safest way to go from Oaxaca to the Pacific, or about the best website to schedule the ferries for island-hopping in Greece. There were a million chances to share by word of mouth our unique experiences with other fellow travelers we met along our path. Without this transference of knowledge, our trip wouldn’t have been the same.

But how to keep track of all of this new found knowledge? I remember when there was always a consumed Lonely Planet at your fingertips, a couple of local road maps, a Moleskine notebook and tons of addresses collected before and during the journey on loose pieces of papers. I even remember printed emails and long Skype calls with that buddy of mine who already visited the place I was heading to. I enjoyed this part, for me it is the quintessence of traveling, but I always thought that this process could be improved in a way to make the globetrotter’s life easier without losing the fun part!

So, when smart phones became really smart, internet connections globally reliable and I became professionally more involved into mobile app design, I grew obsessed with the idea of combining a Lonely Planet and an Instagram! A travel tool as exhaustive as a guidebook, but immediate as a snapshot. I imagined excellent travel information generated by a global community of smart travelers, by local experts, travel bloggers and, why not, the same Lonely Planet or other professional content providers, all intelligently organized by the algorithm of an app. All of the information you could ever need in one place.

That vision’s name is Tiplr, because Tiplr runs on Tips!

The first version of the Tiplr app for iOS has just been released, after several months of hard work done by the Tiplr Explorers, what we like to call ourselves and the pioneers who shared the dream with us. Our journey has just begun and if you want to share the dream with us, jump on board and become an Explorer. We need people who are as obsessed, and as passionate as us to share their best travel tips. We need help in creating the biggest community of travelers who together will make Tiplr the last guide you will ever need, as well as a place where you can stand out for your travel experiences!

Tiplr is an open project from which everyone in the travel sphere can benefit. We want Tiplr to be a megaphone from which you can shout your content to a readership who is hungry and excited to follow your tips to wonderful new places off the beaten path. This project has been created by travelers and is for travelers, and will continue to evolve according to the input and desires of the community and its contents.

The ultimate goal of Tiplr is to be a place where you can create the perfect guide: complete with your tips and others’ tips which you’ve selected and curated, itineraries, maps, descriptions, photos, fellow travelers’ comments, as well as your personal travel necessities: documents, Airbnb reservations, airline tickets booked directly from the app, and anything else you need to travel and to showcase your experiences!

Now Explorers, is the time to create! Download Tiplr today and create travel tips, whether you’re currently on the move or sharing insider knowledge from your own backyard. And never stop traveling, because the world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page!
