Imagine the most picturesque destination you can possibly dream of. Imagine yourself at your most relaxed and serene. Imagine snorkelling through crystal waters towards warm golden sands. Morocco • Sleep in a Riad

Dar Jameel is a converted riad style guest house located on the edge of the medina. The word riad comes from the Arabian term for garden and is a traditional Moroccan house or palace with an interior garden or courtyard. You’ll be greeted by a friendly porter with mint tea to sip on while you check in. The riad also has several gorgeous sitting areas to relax, eat a delicious Moroccan breakfast, listen to music, or read. Continue reading this tip here.

Colombia • A Hammock on the Beach

The Caribbean Coast is undoubtedly beautiful, and Parque Nacional Natural Tayrona (Tyrona National Park, in English) highlights the beauty of primitiveness of this area. There are three main beaches here and two offer accommodation. The first beach is known as Arrecifes, the next is La Aranilla, and the most popular for backpackers is Cabo San Juan de la Guía. Arrecifes offers budget accommodation and campgrounds with eating facilities, but the beaches here aren’t suitable for swimming. There are swimming spots within walking distance that are much safer. Campgrounds are also located at Cabo San Juan de la Guía. You’ll need to wait in line to get a hammock or a tent to sleep in. Continue reading this tip here.

Andalucía • A Different Kind of Hotel

Through its calcimine alleys we meet an alternative place: Enfrente Arte Hotel, an old host house from the 15th century, that, since 1997, belongs to the recording producer Filip Eycmans. He conceived it as an hotel for producers and musicians of the cultural world, but after a year he opened the hotel to the public, giving to it a bohémian and innovative atmosphere. This versatile space contains 11 rooms, swimming pool, sauna, art gallery, and recording studio that sometimes is converted to a cinema or concert hall.

Vietnam • Homestays in the Sapa Rice Terraces

In Sapa there are some of the biggest rice terraces in Vietnam, but this area is also known for the villages and different ethnic groups that inhabit the mountain region. Don’t stay in a hostel or hotel, and don’t join a tour group! Here you can stay in the tribes’ homestay for about $15 a night. Finding an homestay is not hard, you just need to go to the center of Sapa and ask the women dressed in traditional clothes. If you don’t find them don’t worry, they will find you! Brazil • Stay in a Favela to Hike at Sunrise

While visiting a favela in Rio is nothing new, guesthouses are starting to offer accommodation for those interested in the authentic lifestyle. As more favelas become pacified, more travelers are becoming interested in mixing with the locals here. The Favela do Vidigal is adjacent to Ipanema Beach, and offers spectacular seaside views. Staying in a guesthouse at the top of the hill allows guests to fully utilize this view! With its easy accessibility to the beaches and heart of the city, it’s no wonder that the Vidigal Favela is becoming a more popular destination to spend a few days. Continue reading this tip here.

Finland • Sleep Under the Northern Lights

In Lapland, Finland, from the end of August through April there is a phenomenon for dream lovers: the enchanting aurora borealis. Lovers of nature, solitaries and intellectuals alike will be delighted to know that there is a hotel that offers the possibility of sleeping under this amazing sky without freezing!

Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort offers rooms, no sorry…igloos! They fit two or more people, and give a front row seat to the infamous Northern Lights. The roof of the igloo is made from glass and from there you can be warm and cozy alone or with your loved one under an astonishing sky! Continue reading here.

Thailand • Bedrooms at Bo’s

The Thai Islands can be an intense experience whether its partying on Koh Phi Phi or diving all day on Koh Tao. If you want a slightly more undiscovered and more relaxed encounter though, we suggest you try Koh Chang. Unfortunately the fancy hillside apartments and hotels don’t match all budgets. This is where Independent Bo’s comes in!

England • Bloomsbury Beautiful

You know you’re in for a treat when you arrive at your accommodation to a hot pot of tea and a slice of homemade lemon drizzle cake after a long afternoon of travelling! The Bloomsbury experience sets the bar for a weekend in Yorkshire, providing the coziest, comfiest and most appropriate backdrop for visiting this pretty city. Continue reading this tip here.

Nicaragua • An Inexpensive Alternative for Sunday Funday

San Juan Del Sur, it sure is the tourist hub of the Southern Nicaraguan beaches! Despite its beauty, don’t be fooled, the prices here don’t vary much from its expensive neighbour, Costa Rica. Don’t arrive on a Friday afternoon without booking accommodation (unless you’re happy to wander aimlessly door to door until you find somewhere vacant) as everyone comes for the famous Sunday Funday and the majority of good hostels are full. We stayed in a private room at Hospedaje Don Wilfredo, and while not a party hostel in the slightest, it was the same price if not cheaper than a dorm room in a party hostel.
