  1. Asheville, North Carolina

Asheville is a vibrant, artistic city tucked in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina. Spend the day hiking a trail or exploring the Arboretum, and then make your way downtown to the bustling city center for dinner, drinks, and entertainment. Local business owners do an awesome job of reflecting the city’s values of nature and the environment; many of the restaurants are “farm-to-table” and source locally grown meat and produce. The “keep local” mindset is why Asheville thrives as a tight-knit community because it provides both locals and visitors with an authentic experience.

2. Dominica

You’ve likely heard of or visited it’s neighboring islands, but this one is sprawling with Mother Nature’s finest work. Impressive waterfalls, secluded beaches, remote points, and brilliant hideaways dot every corner of Dominica. It is most famous for being a filming location of Pirates of the Caribbean, and those shots weren’t movie magic. It is as beautiful to the discerning eye as it is on the big screen. More cruise ships are docking there than ever before, but the island hasn’t been spoiled yet by expensive resorts and big chains. There are no direct flights from the States, so find yourself a connecting flight and see the Nature Island now!

3. Bellarine Peninsula, Australia

The Bellarine Peninsula is a seaside village southwest of Melbourne in Victoria, Australia. Besides the city’s natural beauty, there is always something going on in Bellarine, especially during the summer holiday! And the Bellarine doesn’t discriminate — while this area is popular for beer and wine tours, family-friendly spots and activities are easy to come by, whether its a free sailing festival or pick-your-own berry day at the farm.

4. Nepal

Besides having some of the most breathtaking views in the world, Nepal is home to beautiful culture and loads of adventure. This is a city with charms down every alleyway and gorgeous mini shrines throughout the squares. There are always colorful, religious festivals happening that visitors can observe and occasionally participate in. Locals tend to be very friendly and will likely be more than happy to tell the history of the day’s celebration.

5. Riga, Latvia

Riga, Latvia is a fun, less touristy city in Europe with a lot to offer. The city boasts an awesome food scene, great historical sights, and easy day trips. The city’s old town, and art nouveau district offer some amazing architecture, cool museums, and lots of great places to eat. There are lots of amazing restaurants around town using fresh and local ingredients. There are also lots of options for eating gluten-free, vegetarian, or vegan. Even with going out to eat at great restaurants this country is affordable, and can even be done on a tight backpacker’s budget. There is great nightlife, and some cool bars, like the Skyline bar, which offers an amazing view of the city. If you want to get out of town, you can easily do day trips to a few cool hikes, or an awesome beach town that is even fun to see in the winter.

6. Namibia

If the breathtaking landscapes alone can’t sell you on a trip to Namibia, the access to wildlife and absence of crowds will! It has all the draws of South Africa, without the price tag. Animal lovers can visit national parks, many of which cost less than $10 to enter. Adrenaline junkies can slide down massive dunes. Drive the Skeleton Coast and stay at an authentic camp. As if all of that’s not enough, Namibia is considered to be one of the top stargazing destinations in the world.

7. Aarhus, Denmark

Until recently, Aarhus, Denmark’s cultural nerve center, has been stuck in the shadow of popular cities like Stockholm and Copenhagen. Recently, it has stepped out and begun distinguishing itself with its delicious new nordic cuisine and vibrant art scene. The Danes truly appreciate and celebrate their heritage and history, and Aarhus gives lots of opportunity to learn. Visit during the height of summer and you’ll be rewarded with 17 hours of daylight to explore everything this city has to offer!

8. Guatemala

Avoid the tourist traps elsewhere and explore the heartland of Mayan culture in Guatemala. See the pyramids of Tikal, poking out from the jungle filled with monkeys, iguanas and exotic birds. Supplement your exploration by heading into the city and visiting the Museo Popol Vuh for a measly $5 USD. Spend an adventure filled day swimming, chasing waterfalls and exploring the caves of Semuc Champey. This cultural and natural paradise is not to be missed.

9. Debrecen, Hungary

Budapest tends to take all the fame in Hungary, but don’t let it deter you from the country’s second-largest city, Debrecen. The modern city is Eastern Hungary’s most important commercial and administrative center, which has displayed an unbroken path of spectacular development in all walks of life. Debrecen’s international airport provides direct links to several major European destinations and it is a mere two-hour drive or train ride from Budapest. The slightly eclectic arrangement of architectural styles as well as the streets and alleys, each hiding its very own story, set up an enchanting atmosphere. Thanks to Debrecen’s highly developed public transport, the network of bus and tram lines, visitors can reach all tourist spots in the city in a comfortable and easy way.

10. Taipei, Taiwan

Taipei has a little something for everyone, whether you’re a city slicker or not. Their architecture is unlike any place else in the world. For foodies, there’s numerous new and unusual dishes to taste test in the night markets and beyond. The city is cosmopolitan and busy, but offers natural escapes like Elephant Mountain. It’s affordable, easily navigated on public transportation, and altogether deserving of a visit.
