Punked By The Puppy

I usually get up around 5 in the morning. In addition to being the time I wake up on my own, I have a back-up system.

My Morning Alarm

Her name is Mirabeau. She is our ten-month old Giant Schnauzer puppy. She is pretty good at gettning my out of bed ten minutes either side of 5 AM. Even if I wake up and don’t move, she can tell I am awake.

When she senses I am awake (or thinks I should be), she does what I call “puppy soft-paws”. She puts both paws on the bed next to me, lightly touching me — letting me know she is there. If I don’t get up then she presses her snout into shoulder.

So this morning she gives me the puppy soft-paw treatment and I get up, ready to get going. First thing — take her out to do her business. After that, ride the stationary bike. Then put together some breakfast.

As I was doing this I noticed the time on the intercom system said 6:07. That would be about right, if the clock worked. It always runs fast. About an hour fast. I turned around to look at the oven clock. 5:03 AM.

Then I looked down at the pup. She sat there next to me in the kitchen, happy as ever. Whatever her motivation, she punked my into getting up an hour early at 4 AM.

Usually I look at my iPhone to stream a British news podcast. That day, I did not do so. And I did not see the actual time.

Kudos to you, puppy. But in the future, it will be trust but verify, little Mirabeau. Trust but verify.
