Event Tech Trends: Cashless Payments at the NFL Africa Fan Zone

Last month, the biggest sports league in America hosted their first-ever fan event in Accra, Ghana. The NFL Africa Fan Zone was a great end to the NFL Africa: Touchdown week. With attractions like food and drinks, skill games and drills, a live band, meeting NFL legends and current players of African descent, and showing various Superbowl rings and the famous Vince Lombardi trophy.

It takes a lot for an event to be perfectly organised. Especially an event as big as the NFL Africa Fan Zone. That’s why using Tix RFID technology for cashless payments was the best option for the NFL Africa Fan Zone.

Our Goals

  • Increasing on-site revenue for vendors.
  • Providing a fast and easy solution for guests to purchase items at the event
  • Obtaining data about vendor sales.
  • Eliminating cash on-site for better security.
  • Offering attendees free complimentary credits.

How We Achieved This

The Tix RFID wristbands offered solutions to all the organiser concerns for the NFL Africa Fan Zone. Once on-site at the event, guests were handed RFID wristbands loaded with free credits, courtesy of NFL Africa. Guests could spend these credits on items from any vendor of their choosing at the NFL Africa Fan Zone.

Then we provided on-site top-up stations for guests to top up their wristbands with any amount of their choice, either by cash or MoMo.

Our RFID cashless payment solution eliminated the need for guests to carry cash around the event venue because they could simply tap their RFID wristbands to make fast and secure cashless payments for food, drinks, and other items for sale at the event. Our solution ensures cashless payments are completed successfully within a minute of scanning the wristband. This stress-free way to make payments at events also encouraged attendees to spend more at events.

Each time a guest scanned their wristband at a vendor’s stand, we received that data. This helped us easily track vendor sales.

The Results

The NFL Africa Fan Zone was a complete success, with great feedback for us from vendors, event guests and NFL Africa too!

Every transaction using our RFID wristbands took less than a minute to complete, so queues were significantly reduced, and revenue was increased, meeting our initial goals.

We achieved all of their goals for this event, including:

  • Increased on-site spending.
  • Reduced transaction and queue time.
  • Stored event data about vendor sales.
  • Complete adoption of RFID cashless payments on-site at the event.
  • Increased event guest engagement due to free complimentary credits.
