So this story started out with blocking my window in my home office, so that I could sit in darkness (with a few lights on, obviously).

It helps me focus as the light is usually very strong coming from outside and I used thick curtains anyway. So this is how I did it.

Step 1 — put drywall in front of existing window. Seal up with silicone. Not getting into detail on this step as most people will just use a normal wall.

Step 2 — measure the dimensions (leaving 2–3cm of gap on each side) for your glass plate, and ask your local glass maker to cut one up for you.

Local glass-master in South Africa

Step 3 — Mount the glass where you want to fit it (in my case, on a drywall).

Sub steps:

(1) Cut a hole in each corner. You do this with a diamond bit, modeling clay and water. Have a look at this tutorial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C5hy6SjajQY

(2) Sand the edges of the glass so you don’t cut your fingers. You can use a belt sander for this.

(3) Get special screws from your local building store that have a little rubber ring between the glass and the head. They will also have a nice shiny cap that you can screw on later to make it look nice.

(4) Spacers so that you have a space between the wall and the inside of the glass. I cut up some silicone/caulking tube nozzles as these are usually free.

Total parts cost R740 (approx. $63 USD)

  • 6mm Glass: R700 ($60)
  • Screws: R40 ($3). They usually come with wall plugs
  • Spacers: free as I made my own

Done!
