Morrissey Goes Full Gammon

Bigmouth Strikes Again.

Morrissey’s said a load of questionable stuff and upset hordes of fans with bigoted views that seem to contradict the thoughtful content of his music. The image we once had of him as an introspective, articulate, complicated person has been replaced with that of an angry, old, white man who’s scared of change. Regardless of whether you’re able to separate the art from the artist, it’s well-known that he expresses the type of terrible opinions that would get one (deservedly) labelled a gammon.

So what’s he said now? Long story short, The Simpsons recently featured a character that was an obvious parody of the singer, and it wasn’t particularly flattering. Morrissey was pissed off and claimed the portrayal was RACIST, er, somehow. The character, Quilloughby, appears as an erudite mentor to Lisa Simpson, complete with NHS glasses and a quiffed hairstyle just like the real-life 1980s icon.

Later in the episode, Quilloughby, who only exists in Lisa’s imagination, becomes a fat, old, intolerant man who even eats meat nowadays. It’s a complete transformation and betrayal of his original self, not unlike Morrissey’s career trajectory. Although it doesn’t seem very nice to satirise someone as a bloated, racist shadow of their once-great persona, it does seem kinda… accurate.
