Crimes of Passion

Crimes of Passion was written by Jack Harbon.Narrated by Kevin Free and Ron Butler. Release date: 05/26/2022. Format: Audiobook. Length: 2h 41m. Genre: Romance

Crimes of Passion is a funny, short and sexy short story about two rival true crime podcasters putting their differences aside to work on a project at the request of a mutual fan.

The story follows Emery Thompson and Calvin Chamberlain. Emery is a fun loving, younger, popular true crime podcaster with a colorful personality. On his podcast Death Perception he uses humor to bring awareness to crime and how it affects society . Emery is a funny, straight shooting host who isn’t afraid to broach sensitive topics and he’s built a loyal fanbase from being his most authentic self online. On the other hand, Calvin Chamberlain is a struggling true crime podcaster, his podcast A History of Violence explores heinous crimes while bringing light to social injustices. Calvin is described as stuffy, educated and pretentious. He takes his work seriously and he is trying to bring awareness to social issues through his podcast. Unlike Emery, Calvin has yet to secure his space in the podcast world, his accolades comes from his impressive educational background and he’s trying to find ways to take his show to the next level.

Emery and Calvin are two Black Queer men trying to navigate spaces where they are the minority and even though they complement each other, they do not see it at first.

I will start with all the things I loved about this project. As a self proclaimed True Crime Avoid specialist (I live for fluffy stories) the true crime in this story was tastefully done. The story shared sample episodes of the podcast episodes Emery and Calvin worked on without taking away from the original story. I enjoyed the audio performance by Kevin Free and Ron Butler, they truly brought Emery and Calvin to life. Emery and Calvin felt like real people. Even though it was a short audio novella Crimes of Passion will have you rooting for these characters and side eyeing any adversity they face.

Be prepared to laugh, Emery is so funny. I loved his quips and his sly remarks. Calvin couldn’t take him and I loved it.

I talked about what I loved about the project now I’ll delve into what I didn’t like. My dislikes have nothing to do with the style or the content itself. I enjoyed the story but I just felt like Calvin should have done more after he offended Emery.I understood that Calvin was under a lot of pressure but I felt like he didn’t grovel enough for Emery. He messed up and he needed to show more effort. I may be a tad bit biased because I’m a romance lover so I love grand gestures. There was space for Calvin to show more remorse. If grand gestures is not your thing, this project will do it for you. Both characters was accountable for their part in the conflict and they both decided to move on with their relationship. There was good sexual tension and the big moment was behind the door.

Overall I loved Crimes of Passion and if I had to rate it on a five star scale it would be a five star listen for me. This project puts the com in rom, something a lot of romantic comedies seem to miss these days.
