SYNOPSIS:

Grey’s Anatomy meets The Hating Game in Sasha Clinton’s #ownvoices contemporary romance novel…

Mira Krishnan is a cardiothoracic surgery fellow whose three big goals in life are:

1. Achieve superstardom in the field of heart surgery

2. Crush Lucien Stone by showing him that she’s the superior heart surgeon.

3. Fall in love with someone who is NOT Lucien Stone so she can erase her 19-year-long crush on him.

Lucien and Mira have been rivals since high school, and she’d like nothing more than to wipe that smug, overconfident smirk off his devastatingly handsome face.

But when their rivalry goes too far and they’re caught in the middle of a fight by the program director, Mira’s life changes. To avoid being expelled from the fellowship for failing to conduct themselves in an appropriate, collegiate manner, Lucien and Mira are forced to lie about dating each other so they can dismiss their behavior as extreme flirting. But going on fake dates, vacations, and spending time together makes them realize that underneath all the jibes and rivalry, there’s potential for something more…and perhaps, instead of looking into other people’s hearts, they need to look into their own.

Review: This was my first time reading this author and I was excited when I read the synopsis. Long time rivals to lovers is one of my favorite tropes and I was sold after reading the comp titles. I adored Grey’s Anatomy and The Hating Game but Lucien and I missed the mark for me. I gave most of the stars because it was a well written book with the perfect amount of spice. A pet peeve of mine is reading a rivals to lovers where one character hates the other without the writer showing sufficient evidence that the other character in question is indeed a tool. A lot of Mira’s issues stems from her mother and her determination to one up Lucien who she thinks is undeserving and perfect. I don’t think she truly hated him, it came off as envy. Once that impression was made it was hard to go through the book without feeling like Mira was in a one sided competition with herself because Lucien got a compliment from her mother years ago. Even though this book wasn’t for me I did enjoy some parts of it. I loved the banter between Lucien and Mira and the story picked up really fast. I look forward to reading another story from this author with different tropes.
