Begging The Question

We’re constantly looking at children for clues to understanding the creative process because they seem to have it down pat. It’s a process full of endless questions: What’s this, why’s that, who’s this, where’s that, are we there yet? Sad to say, most of us started abbreviating our queries in second or third grade, when we discovered that answering questions earned more applause than asking them. As adults, we’ve learned that questioning conventional wisdom can be dangerous, possibly costing us a job.

Deep down, of course, we know that failing to ask questions leads to sloppy decision-making, poor choices, shallow conclusions, and uninspired thinking. So, it’s an absolute must that we reacquire the habit of questioning this, that, and the ever-present other thing.

Easier said than done. So, how do you start? It’s easier than you think. Every waking hour or so, just repeat a simple phrase — two forward-looking words that form the mantra, “What If?”

Good question, isn’t it?
