Protecting Voting Rights

“The vote is precious, almost sacred. It is the most powerful non-violent tool for change we have a democratic society. We need to return the [Voting Rights Act] to its original effectiveness to ensure that every citizen has a say in the future of our democracy.” —Rep. John Lewis

Erecting barriers around our most fundamental right — the right to vote — weakens the ties that hold our nation together. Limiting the vote hurts hardworking Americans. It silences the mother who must choose between waiting in line to vote or picking up her children at daycare; the widow who needs help casting an absentee ballot; the deployed soldier who must cast their vote from half a world away, and the worker juggling two jobs to make ends meet. And for our democracy to succeed, all of us must be given the chance to make our voices heard. We are at our best when we build bridges, not walls. And that is why this is the section of our 2016 platform that I am most proud of — the most forceful case we’ve made yet in our party’s long and proud history of fighting for voting rights. —Donna Brazile

Fixing Our Broken Campaign Finance System

“Safer communities demand courage, not cowardice, in the face of the NRA. For the sake of the 91 Americans who are killed by gun violence each day, we must break the grip of the gun lobby on Congress and keep guns out of the hands of criminals and suspected terrorists.” —Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi

Principled Leadership

“I know the importance of a Commander-in-Chief who makes thoughtful decisions with the most important power they have: to send our men and women in uniform into battle. We need a president who honors the service of our troops abroad and who respects their sacrifice when they come home — a leader who will provide steady leadership and protect American values.” — Rep. Global Economy and Institutions

“We are clear-eyed about what our country is up against. But we are not afraid. We will rise to the challenge, just as we always have.

We will not build a wall. Instead, we will build an economy where everyone who wants a good paying job can get one… We will not ban a religion. We will work with all Americans and our allies to fight terrorism.

There’s a lot of work to do… But just look at the strengths we bring to meet these challenges. We have the most dynamic and diverse people in the world. We have the most tolerant and generous young people we’ve ever had. We have the most powerful military. The most innovative entrepreneurs. The most enduring values. Freedom and equality, justice and opportunity…

None of us can raise a family, build a business, heal a community or lift a country totally alone. America needs every one of us to lend our energy, our talents, our ambition to making our nation better and stronger…

A country where the economy works for everyone, not just those at the top. Where you can get a good job and send your kids to a good school, no matter what zip code you live in. A country where all our children can dream, and those dreams are within reach. Where families are strong. communities are safe. And yes, love trumps hate.

That’s the country we’re fighting for. That’s the future we’re working toward.” —Hillary Clinton
