Tom Price, Secretary of Health and Human Services?

Meet Representative Tom Price, Donald Trump’s pick to lead the Department of Health and Human Services. The congressman from Georgia has made a name for himself by relentlessly trying to take people’s health care away by repealing the Affordable Care Act — a law that helps tens of millions of Americans access quality, affordable care. If he got his way, as many as 30 million Americans could lose coverage. He’s also the architect of the House GOP plan to end Medicare as we know it and turn it into a voucher program. Here are the facts on Price and his positions:
On the Affordable Care Act:
- Price has repeatedly advocated for the repeal of the Affordable Care Act.
- Price wrongly speculated that 100 million Americans would lose coverage after the ACA went into effect.
Fact check: More than 20 million Americans have gained health coverage thanks to Obamacare
- Price called the ACA “a government takeover that will destroy 800,000 jobs” and lead the U.S. to economic ruin.
Fact check: The U.S. economy has created more than 15 million new jobs since the ACA was passed
- Price supported shutting down the government over defunding the Affordable Care Act.
- Price proposed an Obamacare replacement plan that doesn’t ban discriminating against pre-existing conditions, hurts those who are old or sick, and repeals Medicaid expansion.
On women’s health care:
- Price does not believe there are any women in this country who could not afford contraception if the the ACA’s birth control benefit were rolled back.
Fact check: Before the birth control benefit went into effect, 34% of women voters reported having struggled to pay for contraception at some point in their lives.
- Price co-sponsored a 20-week abortion ban based on fake science.
- Price has repeatedly voted to defund Planned Parenthood.
On other health care plans:
- Price is the architect of the GOP’s scheme to end Medicare as we know it and turn it into a voucher program.
- Price advocates for a plan to raise the Medicare age requirement.
- Price called for putting veterans’ health care benefits on the path to privatization.
- Price voted against expanding the Children’s Health Insurance Program.
And more!
- Price voted against the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act, along with a majority of House Republicans and 22 Republican Senators
- Price called the Supreme Court’s decision in favor of marriage equality “a sad day for marriage.”
Remember — more Americans voted for a candidate who wanted to protect and expand the Affordable Care Act, while only 26% of all Americans back its repeal. Tom Price and his radical plan for the Department of Health and Human Services pose an imminent threat to tens of millions of Americans.
