Hi, and well come to our journey about computer evolution, it have been long time since my last article, ”Debugging Computer Generation part-2”, on our computer evolution journey. We started from the beginning era around the first computers on “The Big Bang of computer part 1–3”, then we jumped to the “Debugging Computer Generation part-2” (fill free to appreciate and i will enjoy to see your feedback), and now we are going to look at what can we aspect to see about the futuristic computer.

Talking about the future is completely challenge topic. Thanks to the past generation and the present we can make some prediction about how the computer will look like on the day to come. No more talking, let’s getting started.

Moore Law’s

On the early day’s found of Intel, his co-founder Gordon Moore, predicted the increase of transistor on a silicon chip effect:

The number of transistor on a chip roughly double every two years, as they cost goes down.

We have seen Moore’s low happening on our past decades, as computer became much faster and the cost much less. The things here is that we are reaching our limits on package smaller transistor on chip since they are already smaller.

Increasing the number of transistor on silicon chip is becoming more complex, and achieving that, does not longer mean reduction the cost of computer as predicted Moore’s law. Nowadays, tech firms are trying new way to improve the speed of computer and to reduce the cost with new solution using other materials, or technology.

Some of this technology that are improving computer performance:

In-memory computing, means to store the data directly on RAM memory, to reduce the delay of I\O(input and output periferic), caused by secondary memory (hard disc drive). As we know, reading some data from I/O, can take much time.

Quantum computing, this is about quantum physics.instead of normal bits used by our conventional computers, it use quantum bits, or Cubits, which can be a zero or one, but particularly both at once, or test multiples logic states, all at the same time. this is the biggest topic now days.

Now lets see what are these technologies are bringing to our computers:

  1. Ubiquitous Computing
Smart Devices

When we think about computer we can image, something like a box (PC) with a display screen(monitor) and some input device like keyboard and mouse. on new era computers don’t look only on that way, they look like everything. This sounds crazy but image if you could interact with your fridge, being told what is missing there or it encomends itself what is missing there. Another occasion can be switching a light using using smartphone, control temperature, open the door, prepare a cafe, even control you TV.

We are talking about obliquity computing witch means computer can be in any format, in everywhere. This only possible with a network that will connect the devices together making it able to receive a commands or sending some data.

2. Virtual reality

virtual reality headsets

This computer device is one of my favorite technologies. It’s like a three-dimensional environment simulated that make you immerse completely on new world(virtual one), using Virtual reality headsets, with other devices with sensors make it possible having full interactions with objects there. With this technology we can do amazing things.

Things like some experiences that could no be done in our physical world, because of how danger it could be, or cost associated with could be performed in a simulated world using Virtual reality.

There are some big tech investing on this area like Sony on PlayStation VR for game industry, and other giant like facebook with Oculus, Google with Cardboard witch you could make yourself.

3. Augmented reality

images showing argument reality

According to Wikipedia:

Augmented reality (AR) is a live direct or indirect view of a physical, real-world environment whose elements are augmented by computer-generated sensory input such as sound, video, graphics or GPS data.

This add some digital information on our physical world on real time, like looking at a building being able to see some additional information like how tall is the build or when it was done, or detecting some object far away from our eye even see some Pokemon around your city using Pokemon Go app.

To experience this technology we just need a device with a processor, GPS, display, and sensors for input information. Thanks to our evolution on technology, there a billion of them like smartphone, tablets that make it possible.

Companies like Google have experience in this field with they projects Google glass, and another is the giant Microsoft with his Hololes witch is making this journey more exciting.

4. Perceptual computing

We have gone from punched cards as input data in first computer generation to keyboards, from mouse to touchscreen. Now we can be able to command our devices using natural gesture like play a video with a blink on eye based on eyes tracking, or changing a TV channel using hand movements.

Perceptual computing is a new way to interact with computer devices using natural gestures without need of physical input data devices such as keyboard for sending commands to computer to perform some action. The gesture can be performed using a camera, microphone for audio input, some sensors witch will detect the user movements. With application like Google now, siri or cortana our device can be fully alive using our voice to command it.

5. Smartphone as a PC

Smartphone as a PC

This cool staff is about to change our life completely. Imagine you PC on your pocket, it mean wherever you go you are able to mount your work station, and turn you smartphone as PC. All you need is a big screen display, mouse and keyboard to make you work station complete.

The companies behind this are Microsoft, with his window 10 OS, and Samsung with Android OS. There a remained some big challenge faced with this approach, one of them is that some window phone apps are not prepared for big screen displays.

6. Wall computing

Imaging on a business meeting, your have a full screen device that you can interact with, using gestual sensory or touch for commands input, allowing the team to work together with data, taking some real time decision. This is all about wall computing.

This computer is a kind like digital whiteboard, big screen device on wall, that make you interact with, and can be used on business meetings, even school for easy and really time interactions.

Before you go…

These are some of dozen computer technology, there are still more as the time pass by new technology still emerging, witch mean there are more much work to do.

The end…

This is our end of Computer journey, as some villain’s Movies says “i will be back”, i say so. But with new post and new journeys towards technologies.
