Virtual Reality, the steroids to save our education system
My greeting! First of all, I would like to thank everybody who read my posts, and for given feedback, I really appreciate your supports!
Here goes one more post, getting a bit deeper into some of the greatest applications of Virtual Reality on education.
beginning…
We are living exciting times, our way of life is changing dramatically and improving in many areas with automation task, using machines allow us to redirect our focus to other tasks. Despite all these changes, there is one field where the rhythm is not as the growth of technology, the education.
Lots of technicals used nowadays in educations does not work anymore. One of the problems I face in our current educations are:
Sometimes we don’t see a motivation to study a certain topic because we think we will never use it, and the only motivation is just to pass the test or exam.
Another thing is, in learning some abstract concept, like a solar system for instance: Hear someone speaking about the solar system, I think, can be difficult to understate deeply because we have to imagine some of this concept and creating a link of content to make sense. I think it would be so interesting to learning about the solar system going in the solar system, but it would cost too much to archive this experience in the traditional way. If we could find some way to supper that problem, our education would be more interesting.
Thanks to the virtual reality, this experience is possible. New ways of learning can be used. In virtual reality. The students have all the tools to discover himself those abstract concepts hard to explains in classrooms, and to make it practical.
Some think interesting about educations is that when you finish and try to apply for a job, the employer require may be 2 up to 5 years of experience, but as we know many people have not those years of experience and even in school there were not those practical lessons to consolidate those abstract concept they learn. May be because the school could not afford those materials, or the materials are damaged and have no condition to be operated and many time the are obsolete, because of the fastest growing rate of technology.
Using Virtual Reality technologies students are able to have those practical lessons, being able to engage much content in a funny way.
now lets see how can we apply a VR to educations:
History
I love story, what we are now is because of our history. I remember the way I used to learn history in my classroom years ago. It was something which you spend most of the time listening to your teacher and accepting the facts and arguments. Using VR technology the students can back the time until the historical moment, and figure out themselves what happens like they are living in that exact moment. Virtual Reality enables to engage that level of experience.
Art
Creativity is doing something in different ways. With VR students can experience the new possibility of making art. Instead of painting a wall in 2D dimension, using VR it is possible to represent in 3D, in more less cost because there is no need to buy papers, pencils, pens, colors and other traditional materials, being only limited by our imaginations.
Biology
The only way to see our heart was as a picture on the books. Now there are some applications being developing in VR platform that enables students to see our body from inside to outside in a 3D model, understand the structure and how are they connected to one another. This way of learning can motivate students in learning process making the lessons more interactive than a passive.
Chemistry
In my secondary school we had no laboratory, so the idea of making some experimentation was out of our scope. For those people who had the opportunity to have some experimentation on a laboratory for sure was not accessible for all. Using VR on schools can enable to use a simulated environment with all features like a real laboratory, making it accessible to all students, to experience by they own, and they no longer have to be afraid of damaging the equipment, as they a completely virtual and students are safe there.
Geography
geography is the subject that made me travel to different parts of worlds and understand a bit about how things are organized. We can experience what is to be with other people from different country and culture like we were there. We can travel to impossible places like at top of Everest mountains, inside of oceans, even to another planet like marts. We can understand compositions of our planet, layer by layer, how Vulcan works, from inside to outside and more cool things, all with Virtual Reality. This is what a VR Google project Google Expedition is about.

Math
Am I still asking me why so many people hate math? I think it is the most abstract subject of all. When we don’t find meaning in what we do, we face lake of motivation, then we don’t care much about. If we could connect those gaps showing how we are applying those concepts to the real world, we could gain more attention of students. a simple example would be by teaching a simple add and subtraction number using some animations to make the process funnier.
Language
One of the problems with learning a new language is to find somebody to practice with. I attend to do an extra course of language in English. The only place to practice was in a classroom, after that, my performance slowed down only because I couldn’t find a way to constantly practice. VR can have a huge benefit on language, simulating ambient, putting the students in different ambients to put skill language into practice. This is what Monday is about. It is a platform that enables to practice your skill language.
Those are some of many possibilities where we take a full advantage of Virtual Reality technology. VR is still on the early days, there is more to be done. But we can ignore all the benefice it has to offer us. Its time to think seriously about how to use it to improve or current education system.
Before you go…
This is the end of the article but on next post we are going to learn about how to get started with Virtual Reality.
