This is Why Formal Education Means Nothing in the Real World

A college degree isn’t enough to help you to set you up for success

Education is a scam. I’m convinced.

Mind you, this is coming from someone who’s been there. Twice. Undergrad AND masters degree. I may even go back to do another one – shoot me.

But I won’t be going back because of what we traditionally think when considering higher education. I’ll return when I need to because by then, I’ll leverage all the opportunities necessary within and adjacent to that environment. I won’t be relying on the diploma to get me to where I need to go. It isn’t enough any more.

I grew up in a working class, migrant household. The goal was always clear – go to college, get good grades, get a job. Happy and fulfilling life completed. Mission accomplished.

Job done.

But what I wasn’t fully prepared for was how irrelevant higher education would be in the real world.

You see, college creates a safe little bubble for a lot of us. A place where we can cultivate connections, build our confidence, and learn more about a subject we may generally have interest in.
