Trust

First day in the new job; Streaming, Erlang, and a sunburn

Today, after having driven about 2 days (ok 22 hours split in two), we are in the South of Spain. Today, was my first day working with Steve, one of the owners of Id3as.

Result: I am tired, not only from the drive, but also a lot of new ideas and other stuff to remember, but it was a lot of fun!

But, I thought you would work remote?

I can hear you think: “All though this is quite remote from where you live, this isn’t what I expected when you said you would be working remotely”.

And you are correct; these first two weeks working in the new job are not remote, they are face to face with Steve. When I joined Id3as we agreed that I would spend about 2 weeks with one of the guys in person.

I could choose between the UK or South of Spain, one of the most difficult choices in my live. Anyway…

The idea was that this is to ensure I would get a quick start into what they are doing and specifically where I would be working on.

And all though this is important, I do think that there is something even more important then that.

Building trust

This really is a bonding exercise, to ensure that when I go back home and start to work remotely that we both know a littlebit more about each other.

Understanding the solutions we build, or getting answers to questions, those things are easily solved with modern technology.

However getting to know each other still works best in person. I believe that spending these two weeks here in Spain working together face to face will help when we work together remotely.
