The Future Of Logistics

The future of logistics is already shaping up to be radically different and more fulfilling than what we experience today. Advances in computing, robotics and the power of the internet mean a scenario where near instant fulfilment for the consumer and business is possible, whilst also having much less impact on the environment.

Organisations such as DHL, Fed-Ex and Royal Mail are having to rethink how they approach logistics and delivery in order to keep up with new disruptive forces from the likes of Amazon and exciting new start-ups.

What will the world look like in this future scenario? We simply have to take a look at the emerging technologies across the field in order to see where we are headed. Some of the most exciting prospects are examined below:

  1. Drone Deliveries

The most prominent and often met with most scepticism technology involves the use of drones to deliver packages to customers. Amazon has delivered packages with a drone to a few lucky users, as well as in advertising stunts involving Jeremy Clarkson (seen below.)

But high publicity failures from organisations such as UPS (TechCrunch), questions about privacy and air pollution have meant that this idea is still seen to be a while away yet.

2. Ground Drone Delivery

Although technically still a drone, these drone delivery vehicles are being used by Dominos in small tests across the US in a deal with Starship Technologies. The six-wheeled vehicle is kitted with a range of sensors to deliver straight to the door of residents living near participating stores.

3. Autonomous Trucks and Cars

One important development for the future of logistics is the autonomous vehicle.

Driverless vehicles can operate without the need for breaks, can reduce fuel consumption from vehicles and speed up delivery times. The technology is likely to mean large job losses for truck drivers and taxi drivers around the world. Nevertheless the number of road accidents a year will drop dramatically as a result!

Hopefully, all of this accumulates to a safer, more efficient, greener and ultimately happier future!
