December 31: Today in Dance
Born Today: Bebe Neuwirth
Broadway dancer/actor Bebe Neuwirth (1958-) is perhaps best known for her role as the uptight Lillith in the sitcoms Cheers and Frasier or as the aunt in the movie Jumanji (1995), but she has had a concurrent career on Broadway, appearing in Fosse shows such as Dancin’ (1978), Fosse (1999), and multiple revivals of his work. In fact, it was after seeing Pippin (1972) on Broadway that inspired her to be a dancer on Broadway rather than a ballerina.
Also Born Today: Ballet dancer Jean Schwarz (1884–1936), the patriarch of a large French ballet family, butoh dancer/choreographer Ushio Amagatsu (1949-) founded the performance group Sankai Juku, in 1975, and singer Park Jae-sang, AKA Psy (1977-) released the song Gangnam Style (2012) and performed the catchy “invisible horse dance” in the music video.
