Born Today: Tamara Karsavina

Ballerina Tamara Karsavina (1885–1978) left the Imperial Russian Ballet in 1918 to join the original Ballets Russes permanently. Prior to 1918, she was often a guest artist with the company and originated roles in Le Spectre de la Rose (1911) and Petrouchka (1911), both by Michel Fokine (1880–1942). Following her time with the Ballets Russes, she relocated to England and helped to found the Royal Academy of Dance in 1931.

Also Born Today: Dancer Gamar Almaszadeh (1915–2006), who is considered the first ballerina of the Muslim world, began studying dance in Azerbaijan in secret and choreographed and performed in the first ballet to be created in the country — Maiden’s Tower (1940).
