October 27: Today in Dance

Born Today: Kazuo Ohno

Kazuo Ohno (1906–2010), iconic Butoh artist, who dedicated his most famous solo to La Argentina (1890–1936), the Spanish dancer he saw perform in the mid-1920s. He described his role in the piece as being both the bull and the bullfighter. It is this tension between bitter rivals that gives the work its emotional core. Today he would have been 108 years old (he almost made it to 104).
