In the field of psychology, definition of this term is as follows — It is the mental discomfort experienced by a person who simultaneously holds two or more contradictory beliefs, ideas, or values.

Though the psychological definition makes it sound like a failure of the human psyche, it is, in fact, a vital asset. Contradictory ideas/beliefs exist in every culture and it is these contradictory opinions that compel us to question, evaluate and criticise.

Contradiction in our society has always existed, for instance, ever since the French Revolution, equality and individual freedom are seen as fundamental rights. Yet, equality can only be achieved by curtailing the freedoms of others who are better off. Guaranteeing individual freedom affects equality.
