Younger co-workers have a problem with people that have been around the office a long time, but they don’t have a problem with older people. None of them cringe because someone with grey hair enters a room. They don’t care if you don’t wear the latest styles, walk a little slower, or need some extra time going down the stairs. They don’t care that your kids are their age. It’s not your age that matters. It is what happens when people get old.

Old isn’t a certain age it’s a mindset and they expect those who have been around the company a long time to fit into that category. They aren’t impressed by your longevity and while they respect your knowledge they doubt your self-proclaimed expertise. They know there are newer and better ways of doing things. As you mandate the old way of doing things they see through the hypocrisy. Ever see younger coworkers’ smirk after you mention a mail merge? They don’t know what it is and I’m not sure they need to.

A thirty plus year employee announced ever so bravely to our tech guy that she couldn’t understand a word he way saying. She doesn’t speak geek. She missed the boat that launched with the Internet. Tech is no longer for a select few. We don’t even call tech people geek anymore. We call them…
