Doing a favor
Through my aunt’s window you can see far away
over the roofs of the town
There’s only one object blocking the view
Technically, it’s too thin to block the view
but you can’t help noticing it before you look out
The object is a copper wire hook
It hangs from the upper windowsill
Whoever fixed it there, it must have been scary
standing in the window on the fifth floor
holding a hammer
exerting strength upwards
working against gravity
trying to hit the nail on the head
with a trembling hand
Gravity can win at any moment
I fixed it there for a reason
The hook is not too large
You can’t put your head in it
while you’re looking out of the window
Unless, of course, you have a very small head
I wasn’t worried when my aunt asked me this favor
The size of my aunt’s head is regular
She said the wire hook would serve a purpose
Before the hook got there, you could look out of the window
and enjoy the view of the wet roof tiles
It rains a lot in this town for some reason
It’s more difficult now, you have this uneasy feeling
You wish there were no hook at all
Or once there is, you wish you knew the reason
