“The Web Summit 2018 is over, and we’re happy to share some of its highlights that we find the most interesting.

This year’s number really are impressive: the event in Lisbon, Portugal welcomed over 70K attendees from 159 countries, 1200 speaker, 1200+ investors and over 1800 startups, making it one of the largest gatherings of tech enthusiasts from all over the world.

The event was so well organised that we didn’t even notice that undoubtedly huge amount of people at the Altice Arena in Lisbon. No lines, no useless papers — only a masterfully developed smartphone app that featured a QR code scan, an interactive map of the venue, the event schedule updated in real time and a user friendly messenger.

Top trends of the summit: AI, Robots and Crypto. Here is a presentation of a new social robot from Furhat robotics, and guess who won the PITCH competition among tech startups? Self-driven car project!

New tech forces are, beyond any doubt, fashion and automotive industries — what would disruption bring there? Watch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rAWC_SUw2WY

Christopher Wylie, the whistleblower engaged in Facebook and Cambridge Analytica scandal in 2016, blasted the social network again — on the Election Day in the US, blaming Zuckerberg of being insufficiently attentive to the problems first revealed in the last election. Calling out Facebook for “making a digital clone of our society,” Wylie described Facebook as similar to the European giant that centuries ago plundered the resources of its colonial subjects.

As for the Crypto Conf and crypto talks, we witnessed a massive $125 million airdrop from Blockchain in XLM tokens, and were really surprised by the statement made by CEO of Revolut, the latest tech unicorn: “There is no interest from big institutional investors so far… Unless these big institutional investors and hedge funds move heavily into the crypto world, I just don’t think banks will move because they simply try to make money from their clients.”

Also, watch a very interesting panel featuring Peter Smith, Co-Founder & CEO, Blockchain, Tim Draper, Founder, Draper Associates, and Garry Tan, Co-founder & Managing Partner, Initialized Capital — discussing the wild swings of cryptocurrencies this year, and whether 2019 will be the time for the crypto revolution to actually pose a threat to established currency markets.

Finally, we had a blast exhibiting at the Web Summit and telling the world about Tokenbox. 150+ people registered on our platform, some of them already received a bunch of TBX tokens, and two lucky ones won tickets to Metallica and Maroon 5 concerts at our lottery!

We also talked to masters of the crypto world about latest trends and the most fascinating blockchain use cases — subscribe to our Youtube channel and stay tuned for interviews with Brian Behlendorf from Hyperledger, Franklyn Richards from Litecoin Foundation and Yoni Assia, CEO of eToro!”
