In the hustle and bustle of achieving target, a team often overlooks one important fact that directly correlates to driving a team’s ultimate performance — appreciation. Researchers revealed that employees are more likely to be more positive and productive when they feel appreciated for what they are already offering to the table.

Unlike the yearly Thanksgiving day, here in Tokopedia Data, everyday is an appreciation day for giving thanks to those who have been working surreptitiously, off-the-record, to make it happen and make it better.

At the end of September 2018, Tokopedia Data launched an appreciation board which turns out very well. People from the business and product teams have been eagerly coming to our desks, expressing their tremendous gratitudes through not-so-little post-it notes which were then adhered to a board in the data team’s desks. They sheepishly smiled, complimenting how helpful we have been on building the dashboards, analysis, ad-hoc requests, and many other data-related resolutions we have provided so far.

How It Got Started

The fact “happy employees are more productive” holds true. In Tokopedia, hard work and efforts, that the employees have put in, are always tangibly recognized. Being a data-driven company, Tokopedia Data is undoubtedly among the key members who help realizing the company’s mission to democratize commerce through technologies.

Inspired by how appreciation reduces stress level and produces more motivated, satisfied employees, data team is starting its way to cultivate gratitude mindset in the nakamas.

The simplest and sincerest way to achieve this is through an appreciation board or note that let the users write down their thoughts which will be made visible to all. It only needs post-it notes, a pen, and courteous heart to make this appreciation happen. No SQL, Python, or any other rocket science is required. Easy, right?

Anyone can surely publish their messages with names or even anonymously. This heartwarming activity costs zero marketing campaign, yet so successful by word of mouth.

What’s Next
