The Japan Crypto Eleven
On September 29, eleven cryptocurrency exchanges were officially licensed in Japan. Most reports seemed to indicate that the Japan Financial Services Agency (FSA) has issued the approvals at the national level, however, upon closer inspection of the published licenses, it appears that the application process also ran through the regional financial bureaus for Kanto (Tokyo) and Kinki (Osaka), respectively. Following an application deadline earlier in the year, all submissions were evaluated, and during the inspection process 12 exchanges that had been previously operating shut down. 17 others are still being processed. If you kept count, that makes a total of 40 crypto exchanges.
Hardly any report listed the eleven licensees, so if you were bothered by the same question I had, here they are, including the cryptocurrencies they have been registered with. Two of them, GMO Coin and Money Partners, are registered as retail foreign exchange brokers.
Lastly, if you can make it to our next Tokyo FinTech Meetup on October 24, 2017, Mike Kayamori, Co-Founder and CEO of QUOINE will be the keynote speaker.
