How to set up Metamask for Avalanche
What is Avalanche?
Avalanche is a blockchain that allows users to launch Ethereum dApps that confirm transactions instantly and process thousands of transactions per second, far beyond any decentralized blockchain platform today.
With functioning subnets, Avalanche allows users to deploy blockchains that fit a specific applications needs. Build a virtual machine and dictate exactly how the blockchain should operate.
Avalanche contains 3 built-in blockchains, the exchange chain (X-chain), the platform chain (P-chain) and the contract chain (C-chain).
In order to interact with Avalanche, you need AVAX tokens, similar to ETH and BNB.
In this guide, we will set up a Metamask account for Avalanche.
Install the Metamask Extension
Depending on your browser, which store you use may vary but the end goal is the same. That is to download and install the MetaMask extension.
Create a MetaMask Wallet or Import One
If importing a wallet press the “Import wallet” button and from there you may enter a seed phrase.
Otherwise press “Create Wallet” and setup your password and secret recovery phrase. Store this recovery phrase somewhere offline and safe, on paper or stamped into metal and keep it away from prying eyes. Never store a recovery phrase on I-Cloud or Google Drive, or in a screen shot on your cell phone. These platforms are often compromised.
Setup MetaMask to connect to Avalanche Mainnet
To set up a new network, click on the tab saying Main Ethereum Network.
Scroll down until you find Add Network.
Enter in the Avalanche Mainnet settings as follows:
- Network Name: Avalanche Mainnet C-Chain (or avax for short)
- New RPC URL: https://api.avax.network/ext/bc/C/rpc
- ChainID: 43114
- Symbol: AVAX
- Block Explorer URL: https://snowtrace.io/
Network name can be whatever you want, mine is avax.
Click Save.
You have now connected to the Avalanche mainnet with your Metamask Wallet. Fund the wallet using tokens purchased on Binance or Kucoin. Remember you must have gas on Avalanche to make transfers.
