The oldest Torii-Gate in Japan

While strolling around Arashiyama I stumbled across the oldest torii gate in Japan at the Nonomiya Shrine (野宮神社). You may have noticed that this torii doesn’t have the polished design and characteristic red color: According to a sign at the shrine, this is what toriis originally looked like. It’s also the only remaining Torii gate that has kept the original rough texture without any coloring.
