As co-chair of Governor Newsom’s Task Force on Business and Jobs Recovery, Tom is proud to support Calling All Californians: Shop Safe, Shop Local, a month-long effort to support small businesses and California’s economy by shopping local to bolster our communities and making sure to follow proper safety guidelines.

Tom is a big fan of supporting local businesses. Check out a few of Tom’s favorite places in his hometown San Francisco — and if you’re a small business owner, be sure to take a look at resources from the Task Force’s Small Business Subcommittee below.

Tom’s favorite local businesses in San Francisco

  • Angelina’s Deli-Cafe — established in 1983 by Angie Rando, Angelina’s Deli-Cafe is both a cozy neighborhood deli and a bustling destination café. Led by women, the staff welcomes customers as neighbors and offers online ordering to keep people safe.
  • Books Inc. — known as “The West’s Oldest Independent Bookseller,” Books Inc. is a local bookseller with 10 locations in California, offering a great collection of books as well as author events, classes, and book clubs. During the public health crisis, they’ve offered curbside pickup and mail delivery to their customers.
  • Equator Coffees — founded in 1995, Equator Coffees has quickly become a San Francisco staple. They’ve grown from a garage in Marin to many shops around the city, all the while remaining fiercely committed to quality, sustainability and social responsibility. They closed one of their locations in response to COVID-19 but continue to offer takeout at their other six locations.
  • Pearl — A cozy corner restaurant with decadent meals and crafty cocktails, Pearl normally fills up their seating quickly. These days, Pearl is looking out for their customer’s safety — they publicized their COVID-19 changes on their website, letting folks know that they offer takeaway orders and asking customers to wear masks when picking up.
  • Manny’s — Manny’s is a civic events space, restaurant, and political bookshop, all wrapped into one. Community-driven and people-centric, Manny’s has welcomed Tom for many events. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Manny’s has transitioned to offer virtual events on Instagram Live.
