We know that a credit score is important for your financial future and that you need to start building it as soon as possible (if you’re not sure why, click here). But, we always hear that a Social Security Number (SSN) is associated with a credit report. You may ask: can I have a credit report if I don’t have a SSN?

Short answer: Yes.

In the US, a credit history shows an individual’s past record of paying bills, loans, etc. and is used to check how financially responsible he or she has been. Although it was never their intended purpose, Social Security Numbers became the go-to identification number to check the personal credit history of people in the US. Unfortunately, it is still commonly asked for when individuals are opening accounts, installing services, or being considered as apartment tenants. Banks, service companies, and landlords use a person’s SSN to request a credit history report.

Though a SSN is used to match a consumer to his or her credit history, it is not required to have a credit report and matching credit score. If you have ever had a credit card and used it, you have a credit report in the US (the credit card you can get without a SSN). To track your credit history, the three credit bureaus use sensitive information like your name, date of birth, address, employment history, and SSN. While a SSN is the most commonly used identifier of credit bureaus, lenders, and other service providers to access a person’s information, it is only one of several identifiers. Credit bureaus can still locate your credit history without using a SSN.

So, how do you check your credit history? At this webpage, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) provides guidance on how to request a free credit report. And, many banks and credit card companies offer services that regularly monitor an individual’s credit for free or an additional monthly fee.
