Chris describes the moment tonebase evolved from an interesting idea to a reality. Watch Nikita Koshkin’s masterclasses on his compositions — Usher Waltz, Pieces with Clocks, The Fall of Birds, Introduction and Vivace — available on tonebase.

When we started this project — now known as tonebase — an intriguing question on all our minds was, “When would this become real?” I specifically remember that sudden moment of reality coming when we received a video from Nikita Koshkin walking through and demonstrating his hit masterpiece Usher Waltz.

In that one 15-minute lesson, I fully realized the value of what we were creating at tonebase and the impact we could have in the music community which we have been a part of throughout our lives. We were no longer just making instructional videos. We were forming connections and giving students access to guitar greats they would never otherwise have the opportunity to learn from. As a guitarist myself, I truly felt connected watching this video of Maestro Koshkin and understood the intention behind Usher Waltz like never before.

Since that initial video, we have received and posted two other classes on Maestro Koshkin’s compositions, Piece with Clocks and The Fall of Birds, with a fourth in the works… (stay tuned!) We are also working with other guitar composers — including Dusan Bogdanovic, Ben Verdery, Frederic Hand, and Vojislav Ivanovic — to give students insights on modern masterpieces from the source of the music itself.

Now, I will leave you with this incredible interpretation of Koshkin’s composition The Fall of Birds by our very own Igor Lichtmann. Enjoy!
