The truth is the number of composer-players active in the classical music world these days are few and far between.

Long gone are the days when the greatest composers of every era — Dowland, Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Tarrega, etc.— knew how to handle their instrument as well as a the dots on a musical staff.

While the divide of composer and player is likely here to stay (at least for now), it doesn’t mean we as players should be afraid to do a little composing of our own.

In fact, there is so much a performer can learn from jotting down a few notes in their free time. As we all know, even Segovia went to the effort of piecing together his own compositions even though he rarely performed them.

Giving players like ourselves a guide to bringing our own musical ideas to life was the primary motivation behind the creation of this course on composition with arguably one of today’s greatest composer-players — Sergio Assad.

When we first pitched the idea of a composition course to the Maestro a couple of months ago, he was immediately on board.

In fact, no less than two days later, he had the entire course mapped out and had composed a brand new piece to help demonstrate his personal 5-step composition process.
