Why Can’t Medium Give Us Decent Stats?

This is the most frustrating nonsense

Toward the end of October, the nearly useless stats graph that Medium so proudly provides me took off like a fighter jet scrambling from an aircraft carrier. That would have impressed me so much more if I had the faintest clue why the jet was doing its shocking ad astra bit.

When you see the chart rising like a rocket, you always have hope that the Partner Program page will show a corresponding jump in earnings, but that’s not always the case. I did see an increase here, but the chart seemed to be promising more.

That type of discrepancy is often easy to explain: the read stats on the Stats page chart include the zero-pay reads by non-members. Look at these two stories with similar reads for a perfect example:

Why such a difference? It’s because the Procreate story had only a small number of members among its readers, while the Apple Watch piece had many, many…
