3 Things We Learnt From The Manchester Derby
Was there really just a 3 point difference between the two sides before this match? Definitely didn’t seem like it.
Baily Back to Normal
It had to be him. After a brilliant performance against Atalanta, where he flung his body at every ball, the same now lead to an own goal. That’s just the way he plays, it may seem brave on some occasions, and dumb on others. But it seems those moments were enough for the United Board to give him a contract extension.
Horrible Defence
“One mistake and people forget how good he’s been.”
This could have been another 5–0 thrashing by the first half itself if it wasn’t for De Gea. Let that sink in.
“The amount of silly mistakes he makes is just not acceptable at this level.”
Shaw and Maguire were culpable as well, but De Gea’s got to do better there.
This inconsistency is becoming a recurring theme throughout the whole United backline now, and it is worrying.
Two Contrasting Styles of Play
United weren’t able to play out the back. De Gea starts using Ronaldo as a Target Man. City aren’t able to play out the back (happened just once, but still) Pep makes sure someone drops deep to create a man advantage.
City had complete control over the game. The fact that Pep was berating Rodri and Foden and giving them instructions to switch the ball wide quicker, and stay wide respectively when 2–0 up while Ole sat on his chair hoping for a moment of brilliance from Ronaldo speaks volumes about the difference in level between the two managers.
Pep’s Tactical Masterclass
How much poorer do United have to play before Ole Gunnar Solksjaer gets the sack?! And if the Glazers ‘supposedly’ can’t find a more competent coach, they should go too.
