5 NBA trades I want to see during the 2022 offseason

We’ve reached the doldrums of the NBA offseason with fans scouring social media to find a Kevin Durant or Donovan Mitchell trade update. While the majority of the league is focused on the big-time players being moved, there are a few minor pieces that could be dealt in a trade that helps all parties involved. Here’s a handful of hypothetical trades that should be explored over the rest of the 2022 offseason.

John Collins to the Hornets

Atlanta gets Kelly Oubre Jr, P.J. Washington, Nick Richards & ’23 1st (via DEN)
Charlotte gets John Collins
It’s no secret that Atlanta has been trying to deal John Collins for months with the high-flying Hawk yet to find a new home. The addition of Dejounte Murray and the impending contract extension for De’Andre Hunter could see Collins become the odd man out in ATL. That’s where Charlotte comes into the picture. Eager to add a versatile scoring punch to their frontcourt following the disastrous Miles Bridges situation, the Hornets may have to sweeten the deal with a first-round pick, but offering up Kelly Oubre Jr and promising forward P.J. Washington may be enough to push a deal through.

Jakob Poeltl to the Raptors

San Antonio gets Khem Birch, D.J. Wilson & ’23 1st (via TOR), ’25 2nd (via TOR)
Toronto gets Jakob Poeltl
With San Antonio in full tank mode, there are a few pieces on their roster they could auction off to ensure they freefall as far as possible. Jakob Poeltl isn’t going to move the needle a ton for an opposing franchise, although the Raptors may be interested in a reunion with the big man they once drafted 9th overall. The Spurs will likely be seeking draft compensation in a trade and if Toronto is willing to sacrifice their 2023 1st-rounder we could have a viable deal for both sides.

Mike Conley to the Wizards

Utah gets Will Barton, Rui Hachimura, Taj Gibson & ’23 2nd (via BOS)

Mike Conley hasn’t exactly had the greatest time as a member of the Utah Jazz and as the franchise implodes around him, he deserves to find a new home. There are bound to be a few teams interested in trading for the veteran floor general, with the Wizards expected to be firmly in the mix. They have a few interesting pieces that may appeal to Utah including budding forward Rui Hachimura and scoring guard Will Barton. The former Nugget can’t be traded until the end of August, but if they’re willing to be patient a Wizards/Jazz swap could come to fruition.

Patrick Beverley to the Mavericks

Dallas gets Patrick Beverley
The firesale continues in Utah with Patrick Beverley the next cab off the rank ready to be moved. Similarly to Barton, Beverley can’t be traded until Aug 30th after previously being acquired from Minnesota. However, any team who is able to throw some draft assets into a trade could pry him away from the Jazz, with the Mavericks my favourite landing spot for Pat Bev. Being deployed as a high-energy defensive bulldog in crunch-time lineups with Luka Doncic would certainly appeal to Dallas and giving up a future first-rounder to facilitate the deal is a necessary price to pay.

Harrison Barnes to the Heat

Sacramento gets Duncan Robinson
Miami gets Harrison Barnes
My personal favourite of the batch; an old-school on-for-one that benefits both sides. The Sacramento Kings may have pause taking on Duncan Robinson after already making moves to add shooters Malik Monk and Kevin Huerter to their roster. Although, with Harrison Barnes in the last year of his deal and with one foot already out the door, getting some value for him in a trade is probably the smart decision. Barnes could land in Miami and slot into his usual scoring role averaging 16–18 PPG, providing the Heat with another competent scorer. With Kyle Lowry, Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo all missing significant time last year, adding another string to their bow in Barnes could be the best low-cost option going.
