“What happens from this corner could shape Liverpool’s season, its Alisson — oh, unbelievable” These are the words of the commentator on 16th May 2021 as Alisson Becker has just went up for the corner and — yes, scored with his head winning Liverpool the game against West Bromwich Albion 2–1 which was crucial in them securing Champions League football for next season.

That sums up Alisson for Liverpool. Always giving his 110% on the field, doing his best to help the team; crucial saves, assists and even score!

Apart from saves, Alisson also helps Liverpool immensely in how they play. He’s comfortable on the ball which allows the Reds to comfortably play out from the back, and his alertness to dangers even outside his box plus his expertise when facing a forward 1v1 facilitates Jurgen Klopp’s men to play a high line. His distribution is quite good too which allows the Reds to go long as well.

Most memorable moments:

He has made so many big saves that its hard to pick one — His remarkable save in the dying moments of the UEFA Champions League 2018/19 group stage game against Napoli to deny Arkadiusz Milik an equalizer sticks out because that was massive in Liverpool qualifying for the Round of 16 and eventually winning the whole thing! Recently, his save to deny Darwin Nunez, the former S.L. Benfica and now Liverpool striker, from scoring on the volley in the UEFA Champions League 2021/22 quarter final second leg was outrageous, even Nunez admitted after the game that he thought it was going in.

In 2019/20 season, his assist to Mo Salah against Manchester Utd in January 2020 is iconic, it had the Kop singing “We are gonna win the league”. He saw Salah running from his own half, he picked him out superbly and after the Egyptian scored equally well, “and Alisson has run the length of the field” in the words of Peter Drury. Yes, Alisson ran the length of the field to celebrate the goal with Mo Salah.

In a tough 2020/21 season, his remarkable goal to help Liverpool qualify for the UEFA Champions League is never to be forgotten. In 2021/22 season, his save to deny Mason Mount from the spot in the FA Cup final sticks out as does his save to deny Martin Ødegaard from very close range in the Premier League. His numerous 1v1 saves were also nothing short of spectacular .

Achievements:

Alisson’s first season at Anfield ended with silverware, the Reds were crowned the European Champions after Alisson helped Liverpool to a 2–0 win over Tottenham Hotspur in the UEFA Champions League final 2019. He also won the Premier League Glove in 2018/19, a feat he would repeat in 2021/22. He would keep a clean sheet in the FIFA Club World Cup final 2019 as Liverpool defeated Flamengo 1–0 in the final. Alisson would be crowned the the Best goalkeeper of the year 2019 at the The Best FIFA Football awards. He was included in the 2018/19 and 2019/20 FIFA FIFPro Men’s World11. Alisson would play a crucial role as Liverpool won the Premier League title in 2019/20. After a quite season in 2020/21, more silverware followed in the season 2021/22. Alisson starred by saving Mason Mount’s penalty in the FA Cup final 2022, which proved to be a match winning one. He would win both the domestic cups with Liverpool in 2021/22.

To sum up, Alisson has proved to be worth every penny that Liverpool spent to buy him from AS Roma — He has always delivered when called upon. Surely, he’s among the world’s best goalkeepers and for his manager, Jurgen Klopp, he is the best keeper in the world. Fair enough.

He may well be a Liverpool legend already but considering he still has five years remaining on his contract, he could achieve even more…
