At Ontology Meetups, TOP Network Shows Why It’s a Perfect Platform for Decentralized Communication Apps
TOP Network, a decentralized open communication network, demonstrated its capability to facilitate various decentralized communication apps on the blockchain at meetups organized by TOP’s strategic partner Ontology in San Francisco and Seattle this week, saying that TOP expected to unveil its first decentralized VPN app by the end of this year.
Speaking to over 80 blockchain enthusiasts in San Francisco on October 30, TOP Network founder and CEO Steve Wei elaborated on how TOP Network could make Dapp developers’ job easier: By providing full-stack cloud communication services, including messaging, voice/video, VoIP, VPN, streaming/CDN and more, on the blockchain, TOP frees developers from the headache of building communication stack and deploying network by themselves, significantly shortening the development cycle and driving down the costs. TOP also offers a blockchain-based SDK that wraps all the building blocks of communication apps, such as modules of audio and video signal processing, codec, special effect and network IO, into one package, which developers can utilize easily and thus no longer need to code from scratch.
“You can build any communication app or any app with communication features on TOP Network,” said Steve, a serial entrepreneur who has been in the communication industry for over two decades.
Following the successful launch of TOP’s Testnet at Stanford last month, Steve announced at the Ontology meetups proudly that another TOP millstone was around the corner: By the end of this year, TOP would release BitVPN, TOP’s first Dapp and the world’s first VPN on the blockchain.
Amrita Sukumar, CPO and founder of music app startup Juqebox Inc., told Steve at the San Francisco meetup that she was excited about the promising synergy between the blockchain and communication services.
“A decentralized distributed peer-to-peer CDN/VPN improves our platform during peak viewing times by drawing from underutilized computing power to increase our streaming bandwidth — translating into reduced loading times, higher streaming quality and reduced variable server costs,” Sukumar said in an email later, taking as an example her company’s app that has live stream feature, one of the core communication services that TOP Network aims to provide.
Currently, no real business application has emerged on the blockchain infrastructure, said Andy Ji, Chief Strategy Officer of Ontology, a distributed trust network and public blockchain platform, at the Seattle meetup on Nov. 1. Such a gap in the market is waiting to be filled by blockchain projects with solid, sustainable use cases to combine real-world business seamlessly with blockchain.
TOP Network is one of such projects. Before starting to develop the blockchain infrastructure, TOP’s core team has built Dingtone, CoverMe and SkyVPN, communication apps that have attracted over 50 million global users in total. Those apps, along with all the users, will be ported to TOP Network upon the launch of TOP Chain and generate huge volumes of transactions in the tokenized TOP ecosystem. From day one, TOP Network will carry sufficient real users and business to defeat all the existing doubts on the future of blockchain.
“Without Dapps, a blockchain platform may not be stable, reliable, or secure,” Steve said. “Dapp developers do not want to develop their apps on or move their apps to a new platform. That’s a chicken and egg issue. But for TOP Network, we have both the chicken and the eggs in the beginning. That is why I can guarantee you TOP Network will be successful.”
TOP Network announced strategic partnership with Ontology in early September. Ontology will provide the infrastructural blockchain technology for the TOP ecosystem and offer TOP a comprehensive suite of services such as data exchange, data identification and high-performance smart contracts. TOP Network will share with Ontology the decentralized communication services so that Dapp developers in the Ontology ecosystem can easily build decentralized communication apps or features with SDK and API offered by TOP.
Ontology will also back TOP Network up in fundraising, community operation, and ecosystem development. Ontology’s venture capital firm Ontology Global Capital (OGC) has announced a strategic investment in TOP Network.
