Monash University Virtual School Used By Students In Bomb Shelters And Bedrooms Post Invasion
Sofiia Yakymenko and Margo both grew up during the Covid pandemic and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Faced with shuttered classrooms, parents and teachers sought partners on the other side of the world, resulting in Monash University creating a virtual school for 70,000 displaced children. Despite air raids, Sofiia and Margo attended their classes from bomb shelters or bedrooms — connecting with peers across Ukraine as well as special guests like an astronaut from Canada. The virtual school has allowed them to stay motivated while away from physical classes. Sofiia has even developed a passion for writing while Margo is determined to grow up “as a clever person”.
