Title: Director of Community and Brand
Where are you from? Tell us a little bit about your journey to get here.
I am from Argyle, a town outside of Dallas, Texas in the U.S. There is a saying that you should never ask someone if they’re from Texas. If they are, they’ll probably tell you. If they aren’t — well, you don’t want to embarrass them! Although that saying is a little trite, I am proud to be born and raised in Texas. I came to Houston for school in 2012, and now call it home. It’s one of the most diverse cities in the nation, which is one of the reasons I fell in love with it. I am an explorer by nature and love learning as much as I can through experience. This curiosity has guided me to explore different fields, like psychology, arts administration, event planning and now technology and impact.
What do you do at Topl? Tell us a little about your role and what it entails.
I manage Topl’s branding and marketing endeavours while also serving, developing, and learning from our community.
I may be behind the scenes conducting marketing campaigns or focus groups, or I may be organizing community events and getting to know investors, partners and supporters!
How did you find Topl or how did Topl find you?
I met Kim Raath, Topl’s Co-founder and President, at a Rice Alumni Entrepreneurs and Innovators event. The Rice University community has a great habit of connecting people and fostering important relationships! After seeing Kim’s passion and vision for Topl, it was only a matter of time before I knew I had to join the team.
What makes Topl the right fit for you?
After joining Topl, I immediately felt at home with the team. Everyone is unique, fun, and speaks their mind!
It is refreshing to see a team of individuals that are dedicated to the same mission, while also having the power to voice differing opinions on how to achieve that mission.
We also know how to take ourselves less seriously! It’s the perfect place for me because I like the balance of being passionate and dedicated to making an impact and having some much-needed fun!
What is your favorite project you have worked on and why?
I recently joined Topl, but I am currently enjoying the interesting challenge of messaging. Since we have a complex business structure that is both high-tech and social impact, it has been challenging to find a way to summarize what Topl is in just a few sentences. I have enjoyed getting feedback from the community and learning from them on how to clarify our messaging.
What are you passionate about outside of work? What are your hobbies?
I am passionate about women’s and LGBTQ+ rights and advocate whenever I am able! Whether it is volunteering for political campaigns, serving at resource centers, or participating in marches or rallies, I do my best to continue the fight for equality. I was grateful to be awarded a scholarship to attend the Girlboss conference in Los Angeles this summer, where I was able to connect with women leaders from all over the world dedicated to empowering women. I also very much love the arts: playing guitar, visiting galleries, and reading or writing poetry. Whenever I am able to overlap these passions with travel, I will! I recently visited a museum dedicated to one of my favorite surrealist artists, René Magritte, in Brussels, Belgium, and enjoyed every bit of it!
Which of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are you most passionate about working towards and why?
As I mentioned above, I am really passionate about Gender Equality. By empowering women to reach their full potential, we, as a world, have more potential to achieve. The other SDG I am passionate about is Climate Action. It is the greatest challenge of our generation and very well may be the greatest challenge humanity has ever faced. In order for our and future generations to prosper, we must find solutions to the climate crisis and enact them immediately.
