On May 6th, those celebrities lucky enough to be invited to the Met Gala showed off the latest looks from many designers.

If you don’t know what the Met Gala is, it’s basically the Oscars of fashion. It was founded by publicist Eleanor Lambert and was first held in 1948 to encourage donations from New York’s most elite. But now, famous faces from fashion, film, music and art come together to raise money for the Met’s Costume Institute and celebrate the grand opening of its latest exhibition.

The theme for this years Met was “Camp: Notes on Fashion”, a little confusing, but nevertheless an excellent theme. It was inspired by Susan Sontag’s essay Notes on Camp, which has nothing to do with outdoor camping, like many believed.

Andrew Bolton, curator of the Costume Institute said he chose this theme because he “felt it would have a lot of cultural resonance.” Bolton describes Sontag’s writings as, “love of the unnatural: of artifice and exaggeration… style at the expense of content… the triumph of the epicene style.”

Lady Gaga, Serena Williams and Harry Styles were just a few of the 550 celebrities in attendance. All of which showed their best looks. Williams, Gaga and Styles all co-hosted together.

Lady Gaga was initially the most talked about, with a stunning four wardrobe changes all happening on the pink carpet, but Billy Porter soon stole the show.

Porter entered the venue without even walking, she was carried by six men, all donned in gold Egyptian apparel. Porter herself was dressed in all gold, even wearing gold makeup. Her design was most reminiscent of the Old Testament, oddly enough, saying she was inspired by Elizabeth Taylor’s rendition of Cleopatra and Cher’s costumes.

The 2019 Met was not one to miss, stars and designers showed up and gave it their all.
