There are new projects that will be starting on campus soon. Student Government met on March 18 to discuss a new bill that would completely renovate Tinsley Hall.

Bill SP19–16 would renovate many aspects of the outdated hall. SGA has already spent money on Tinsley Hall in 2016, giving it a new lounge area, but they want more for the students.

SGA President Richard Davis Jr. said, “On the second floor, there’s a need for more tutoring and academic services for students”.

Davis also wants to give students more time in the hall, allowing students to swipe in after hours to study.

The estimated 1.1 million dollar project would completely redo windows and bathrooms in the hall and add computers. Construction is expected to start next spring.

There was a question if printers would be installed in the computer room planning to be built. Howe said, “We are working with technology now, but there will be printers in there”.

Tinsley Hall has not been on the Southeastern Louisiana University campus for that long, but SGA wants to give students some more of what they need.

After the renovation of the lounge in the hall, more students have come to study, proving this project a worthy investment.

This bill was passed with almost no opposition and will move forward with the University next year.

After the Tinsley Hall bill passed, Ken Howe, along with some members of the National Panhellenic Council, came to the floor to share another proposal- a bill to create a plaza for NPHC Greek organizations.

This was not a new proposal, it was started by the previous administration and did not meet funding requirements.

Howe said, “We looked at Wake Forest…and talked to the facility people.” He wanted to make sure he had the right funding. After talking to other schools, he came up with a number of about $90,000-$100,000.

NPHC representatives vouched for the bill saying, “We want to give an opportunity for current students on campus and alumni to come back and see that we are alive”.

The bill was passed and a committee will be formed in the coming days to discuss the details of the project.

The next bill on the agenda was SP19–18. This is a bill that will put solar panels on tables and allow students to have access to electricity outside of the union.

This bill was put forth in an effort to make Southeastern greener and more sustainable. The SLU Sustainability Center has approved the purchase of two solar panels and twelve water fountains.

SGA voted to adopt this bill and will move forward with the project sometime next year.
