QUICK LOOK: Dubathonic
Quick Looks are short reviews of a single performer rather than an entire show.
Recently I’ve been hearing rumors about live performance of electronic music creeping into the scene — not to be confused with producers who DJ their own material, of course. There are artists who either incorporate instruments in their pre-recorded productions, such as Glitch Mob and Big Gigantic, or who produce entirely live, such as Fuck Buttons and Beardyman. I’ve seen a few of these shows and of course the energy of live instruments can’t be beat. The difference between live electronic and mixed recordings is more subtle, in my experience. I’m always inclined to pay closer attention rather than dance.
Locally, for live electronica I know of the Souled Out! party at Zeba Bar (a blend of DJs and musicians) and there’s Dubathonic (producing live.)
I was heading to a house party but I knew Dubathonic was playing at Dr. Clock’s. I had wanted to hear him so I stopped by for an hour or so and enjoyed a smooth, comfortable house set that included a touch of live guitar. His setup fascinated me, of course, and since I couldn’t Shazam anything I took pictures instead. (Too bad I have a crappy phone camera. I’m getting something better soon, I promise.)

It seemed to me that Dubathonic would be excellent at a house party: good energy, but not intrusive. Check out Dubathonic’s album on Bandcamp! And he’s staked out the second Saturday of the month at Dr. Clock’s, so see him for yourself in August.
