SHOW REVIEW: Night Flight @ Cafe Saint-Ex
Night Flight has been popping up on my Facebook feed recently and it caught my eye because of course I’ve walked past the Cafe Saint-Ex on my way to Masa 14 or The Black Cat — never would’ve pegged it as the sort of place for electronic music, though. This week, Andy Grant was spinning and since I only caught three tracks out of his two hour set at Midnight Project (and one of them was wrong,) I wanted to follow up on that.
Cafe Saint-Ex has a wonderful basement bar with a DJ booth. Painted brick, dark wood, odd nooks and crannies, and I caught a bit of that musty basement smell before people started showing up to hear Andy. I was very happy with the bar’s drink selection, as a beer snob. Phone reception was bad but that wasn’t surprising given all the brick. On the down side, the sound system was muddy. I’ve heard worse but it was disappointing.
Adrian Collazo warmed up the evening with a mix of funky and smooth grooves. A small but particular group of familiar faces trickled in toward the end of his set and picked up the vibe of easy dancing.
Andy took over near midnight and he’ll be pleased to know that once again he stumped Shazam for most of the night. I did catch one track though. More people found their way down to the basement and the pace picked up; overall, Andy played a very danceable set although a few of the tracks were more challenging.
It made for an easygoing Thursday night with good house in a good atmosphere. Check it out next week with our own Grody opening for none other than Sam The Man — they are booking some heavy hitters from the local scene!
