Applications like WhatsApp, Instagram, Spotify, Google Chrome are no strangers to most of us as they are one of the top few applications in 2018. There are over two million apps on Apple Store and a high volume of daily active users — WhatsApp for example, has an average of one billion active users per day.

However, the term “decentralised applications” (DApps) require some explanation. What are decentralised applications? How are they different from normal applications?

What are DApps?

DApps are applications which are built on distributed platforms with trust distributed among its users. They are designed to avoid single points of failure and are also more transparent and accountable than existing applications.

Many of us who use applications day to day accept that many of our digital assets do not truly belong to us, and are fully controlled by the application owners. For example, the documents that we upload to websites could easily be taken down or censored by the web host, and we also do not have control over how our data is used by these applications. Moreover, users also find it difficult to switch away from applications, due to vendor lock-in.

With distributed platforms, core parts of the application are run on a distributed network that is publicly accessible and viewable by anyone. Users make use of private keys that grant ownership over digital assets and tokens on this network, which allows users to have full control and authority over these assets. This open model of development also allows other DApp developers to create competing products that plug into this distributed network, giving users more choice and control over the way they interact with these applications. DApps bring back power to the users!

Okay so at this point you might be excited to start using DApps. There are over 2,000 DApps available in the market at the moment and the blockchain industry sees a lot more potential when DApps see mass adoption.

How do you start using a DApp?

Firstly, you would need to connect to a network and there are existing tools to help you do so. The most common ones are Metamask, Scatter and STEEM.

But there’s a problem…

The Biggest Challenge in using a DApp

One of the main challenges faced is the multiple steps required to get started on these tools. It can take up to 16 steps and a beginner can easily be intimidated or puzzled before getting started on a tool like Metamask. This causes many to give up on installing the tools and thus hindering the DApp users-onboarding process. Since blockchain technology and DApps are still very much a work in progress, the user experience is a challenge.

What does Torus do?

Torus solves this problem by letting you use Google Logins on DApps. There is no on-boarding required — just log in with your Google Account and you are good to go!

Torus — Your Frictionless Login for DApps. Here’s how seamless the process is compared to Metamask.

Login to DApps with your Google Account

Three Compelling Reasons Why You Should Use Torus :

  1. Seamless — Only requires Google sign-in and access
  2. Platform Agnostic — regardless if it is Ethereum, EOS, POA, Steem
  3. Secure — we use cryptography to hold your keys across our own distributed network

Torus is currently looking to integrate with DApps, and we will soon be available across many DApps! But for a quick taste of what’s possible, head over to gotchi.app to see how easy it is to start interacting with a DApp with Torus.
