In the early summer of 1947, flying saucer mania swept the nation. Experienced investigative reporter Marilyn Manns was sent to New Mexico to determine what happened early in July. Did an alien spacecraft crash? Was the government covering up the incident? Why would the Army want to keep the alien visitors a secret? Arriving in the desert, she found the answers.

The elevator doors opened. Carl Free patiently waited while several of his fellow passengers aboard the elevator car stepped out, and then he crossed the threshold to the twelfth floor. He watched while a man and woman passed through the double glass doors across the elevator alcove. Emblazoned in gold letters, the words “Sentinel — City Desk” were stenciled on the doors. Through the glass, Carl saw Marilyn Manns. He had only seen her once before, the day she had interviewed for the reporter’s job, but he would recognize her anywhere.

Carl paused and watched her.

She appeared taller than he remembered, but she was wearing high-heeled shoes. He thought the shoes were totally inappropriate for a newspaperman. He silently groaned; he had never hired a woman reporter before. Should he call her a newspaperwoman? In any event, she would never be fast on her feet wearing those shoes. However, they did make her calves…
