We are happy to announce that TotalCross is a new member of Automotive Grade Linux (AGL), an open source project for automotive applications. The announcement was made on September 29th and named four other members besides TotalCross.

It is a wonderful achievement being part of something so impactful on the automotive industry, as AGL. The Linux Foundation hosts this innovative project, which is a reference on open operating systems and frameworks for this segment.

Along with L4B Software, Sibros, Sonatus and Telechips, TotalCross is part of the group of five new AGL members. Dan Cauchy, Executive Director of Automotive Grade Linux at The Linux Foundation, commented on the new step: “We are delighted to welcome our five new members and look forward to leveraging their expertise in embedded software, hardware, and connectivity to further expand the capabilities of AGL.”

As a partner of AGL, TotalCross expects to help the automotive industry to acquire new levels of innovation and launch faster news products, ensuring an excellent user experience for consumers. Working together with Automotive Grade Linux and their partners, we intend to transform the way automobiles are built.

TotalCross is graded as a Bronze Member at AGL, next to big brands such as Intel, Hyundai, Mitsubishi Motors, Samsung, Nvidia, Toshiba, Fujitsu, Adobe and others. For us, it is an honor to be part of this wonderful team.

AGL today counts at least 146 brands contributing to shaping the future of the way we use and interact with our cars. Besides car manufacturers, suppliers and technology companies, a huge group of developers come together for this awesome mission of building a Linux-based open software platform, for applications that can serve as standard for the automotive industry.

The latest release of Automotive Grade Linux was the UCB 9.0 Software Platform. Known as Unified Code Base 9.0, with the codename “Itchy Icefish”, the release was launched in April of this year and includes new features for audio, connectivity, security, OTA and speech recognition.

TotalCross is an open source cross-platform framework developed to bring speed to GUI (graphical user interface) creation for embedded devices. TotalCross has the development benefits of Java without the need of Java running on the device, as it uses its own bytecode and virtual machine (TC bytecode and TCVM), created specifically for performance enhancement. TotalCross runtime is currently at 5MB to bring mobile-grade user experience even for low-end MPUs.

“GUI development is a time-consuming task in automotive projects. Our goal is to reduce it up to 80% and we believe that being part of AGL allows us a greater proximity to the automotive market, facilitating the understanding of its needs and specific requirements,” said Bruno Muniz, CEO and Co-founder of the TotalCross Platform.

We have a long journey ahead and being part of it with AGL is an important step for the future. TotalCross is committed to helping to build a strong community in the development of car applications.
